Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Bombad Radio: Episode 198 is hosted by Jeremiah and James as they cover topics like Rogue One and an X-Wing being launched into space. Then they break to Jason and a Star Wars Celebration Anaheim recap he did while at Anaheim with some friends. It’s a little noisy, and sometimes a lot noisy. It also goes on for some length as they ambitiously try to cover everything. Then they switch back to James and Jeremiah for more Star Wars discussion before Jeremiah switches over and talks with Jason about the Seattle Star Wars costume exhibit. Lastly they got back to James and Jeremiah for a little speculation on when we might see a full trailer for The Force Awakens. The episode covers a lot, but it might not be to everyone’s liking.
Fly Casual: Episode 40 is their Memorial Day episode featuring some extra friends as they all gather together in person for the episode. It leads to some extra goofing around, lots of jovialness, and even some Star Wars. This is their news and toy report episode so they do touch on some Star Wars news and they have a short collecting segment that’s actually pretty cool.
Full of Sith: Episode CXVII features Bryan, Mike and special guest Dunc (Club Jade) as they talk The Force Awakens, Rogue One, Rebels, Zahn pronunciations, a rumor about a Shadows of the Empire sequel, and the reveal of Serkis’ character name Snoke. There’s a little bit of everything in this episode.
Functional Nerds: Episode 195 is going back a little bit in their library, but it features a nice interview with authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (aka James S.A. Corey). The interview covers their book series The Expanse, how they work together as co-authors, and how their series wound up turning into a SyFy tv show and how that’s turning out.
ForceCast: Kevin Kiner interview is conducted by two hosts I haven’t heard before on The ForceCast: Chris McGuffin and Kyle Winner. One of the hosts has a very professional broadcast voice which oddly enough seemed out of place and took me out of the episode for some reason. It’s odd, because you would think a professional voice would sound good, but for some reason it just didn’t click for me, and it’s a huge contrast with the other host. That aside, Kevin had some cool things to say so it’s worth checking out.
Jedi Journals: June 2015 episode covers their acquisitions, Star Wars Reads Day being announced again for this year, price increases for paperbacks (Tarkin will be $9.99), lit news and listener feedback. No guests this time around.
Radio 1138: Episode 28 is a Star Wars Celebration Anaheim recap featuring a bunch of interviews including author Adam Bray, voice actor Ashley Eckstein, and audiobook narrators Mark Thompson, January Lavoy and Jonathan Davis. Both the Adam Bray and Ashley Eckstein interviews cover some good ground, and the interview with the audiobook narrators is a quickie. Afterwards they have coverage of the Madame Tussauds Star Wars exhibit. Excellent episode.
Rock Out Loud: Hanging Out Strikes Back features another round of random picks from Steve and Kristin. There’s some good songs including a few I plan on tracking down like the album by Brandon Flowers. They cover AC/DC, Def Leppard, Journey, Bruce Springsteen and more. Aside from the music, they also go off on a lot of tangents such as Smallville, why Journey is better than the Eagles and the movie Tommy Boy. I liked how the music kicked off quick in this episode rather than it taking a long time to get to the music. However it also means there’s a lot of discussion between songs, but it works.
Star Wars Bookworms: Episode 42 starts with some listener feedback, then they discuss Jeffrey Brown’s Star Wars books. They flip through each pointing out their favorite moments and go all the way up to and including Jeffrey’s newest book Darth Vader and Friends. Then they cover DK Books’ Ultimate Star Wars. It’s a good discussion of each, giving listeners an idea of what to expect, or for people who have already read the books, it gives you an idea of what elements other people are picking up on.
Trek.fm – The 602 Club: Episode 32 features an indepth discussion with Nic Anastassiou who was an editor on Star Wars: The Clone Wars. If you’re familiar with the My Star Wars Story podcast, then you’ll have an idea what this episode is like. Nic covers everything from his earliest Star Wars memories to how George Lucas and Dave Filoni would mess with his Star Wars toy collection at work. He talks about how he wound up at ILM, working on The Clone Wars, and working with Dave Filoni and George Lucas. Nic goes deep with a recollection of some of his editing sessions with George and Dave, going over their thinking process and what it was like creating the show. It’s a really awesome inside look at things and definitely worth a listen for any TCW fans. Fair warning, though, this is a long episode, so set some time aside.
